express your Self …through Active Living & the Arts
In July, the Watermark Communities kick-off the “express your Self” campaign through the Arts. Get inspired by visiting the Florence Griswold Museum on Wednesday, July 2nd when the bus departs for Old Lyme at 10:00am. Upon arrival, lunch will be served at the Old Lyme Inn where you will not only enjoy the food but also the fabulous Impressionist paintings on loan from the Jeff Cooley Gallery. After lunch, stroll over to the Florence Griswold House to see Miss Griswold’s timeworn family home that was open to artists searching for a quiet country retreat where they could find sources of inspiration for their artwork. Be sure to visit the studio of William Chadwick where the special exhibit “Impressionist Giverny: American Painters in France, 1885-1915” is on view. Organized by the Musée d’Art Américain Giverny, the exhibition has over 50 paintings featuring Impressionist masterworks by American artist working in the village made famous by Claude Monet. If time permits, there is more - visit the award-winning Krieble Gallery featuring changing exhibitions of American art or take a walk through the historic gardens with beautiful riverfront views. Inspired? Join Joe Cavallo for a three-week Art Refresher Course. This course is offered to beginners and intermediate artist working in watercolor or colored pencil. The course includes discussion of art materials and step-by-step guidance in completing a finished work of art. Joe Cavallo is a commercial artist and runs an art workshop at Heritage Village. Resident Jack Levine will join Joe to assist him during the classes. Classes are scheduled on Thursdays, July 10th, 17th and 24th from 1:00 to 3:00pm in the Art Studio. Feeling truly inspired now, why not submit your finished artwork for display in East Hill’s first Juried Art Show scheduled in August. Not limited to watercolor or colored pencils, all new or recently created artwork (within the last five years) will be accepted for the Art Show and also entered into a contest. The top five winning art pieces from East Hill will be pooled with other Watermark Communities’ artwork for final selection. Winning artwork will be featured in the upcoming 2009 Expressions Calendar. More information on Art Show participation and celebration will be provided soon.

Sharon Audubon Center
On over eleven miles of mixed forest, meadows, wetlands and streams, the Audubon Center and the Emily Winthrop Miles Wildlife Sanctuary have been connecting people with nature for over forty years. Their mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of the earth’s biological diversity and humanity. Be sure to visit the center’s Raptor Aviaries where fifteen birds of prey are housed. These birds have been determined non-releasable, meaning that they would not be able to survive on their own in the wild. Sophia, the resident Barred Owl pictured, was brought to the Center in 2004 when she was found starving and emaciated. Browse through the Nature Store’s wide selection of books, supplies and gifts including some very interesting electronic bird calling gadgets. Bring a brown bag lunch for a peaceful lunch in the picnic area, and for dessert, save room for ice cream on the way home. The bus will leave from the Main Lobby at 11:30am on Wednesday, July 9th for the trip to Sharon.
