History
The Colorado River Valley's original inhabitants were Indigenous peoples who believed that Spirit Mountain, the highest mountain visible from Bullhead City, was the center of creation. When Spanish explorers arrived in the area in the 1500s, they called these natives "Mojave," a Spanish interpretation and abbreviation of their native name Pipa Aha Macav, meaning "People by the River."
In the 1800s, the area of current-day Bullhead City was a hub for ferry and steamboat service on the Colorado River, providing transportation for supplies and mail from the small settlement of Hardyville to the gold mines in the area and for gold ore from the mines to be processed and sold.
In the 20th century, construction of the Davis Dam brought workers to the area, and the community of Bullhead was born, named after "Bull's Head Rock," a rock formation in the river. Bullhead City superseded Hardyville and Bullhead to become a popular tourist destination with its year-round sunny weather, water activities, and the attractions of nearby Laughlin's entertainment scene.
