Former Teacher and Student Reunite to Bring Music, Joy, and Meaning To Senior Living
In a heartwarming reunion more than a decade in the making, Michael Clupper, a retired Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) science teacher, found himself reunited with one of his former students — this time, as colleagues at Watermark Laguna Niguel. Their story, recently featured in the Santa Ana Sentinel, has touched the hearts of many, showing how unexpected connections can create powerful moments of joy and healing.
Michael, a stage 4 cancer survivor, was surprised to discover that Rashad Hong, the community’s medication technician, was once a curious sixth grader in his classroom at Villa Fundamental Intermediate School. Rashad, too, was shocked to recognize his former teacher. After a few days of wondering, he finally asked, “Were you a teacher before?” And their connection was instantly rekindled.
Now, their roles have reversed. Rashad has taken the lead in showing Michael the ropes around the community, even helping him as he learns to drive the community bus. Rashad also brings joy to residents through scenic outings along the Southern California coast. Meanwhile, Michael has embraced his passion for teaching in a new way through his music-based program, Flashback with Michael. This creative experience uses music and a giant map to spark memory, conversation, and community among residents — especially those in memory care.
