Lincoln Memorial
A symbol of the enduring struggle for freedom and emancipation, the Lincoln Memorial is a larger-than-life monument that honors a larger-than-life American persona, Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln’s second inaugural address and the Gettysburg Address are both etched into the memorial’s walls. The Lincoln Memorial is worth the visit, day or night, although some travelers believe the most inspiring time to visit is (just) after dark, when the attraction is well lit and less crowded. No matter what time of day you visit, it will inspire you nonetheless.
Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s greatest museums. Located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., you’ll embark on a journey starting with Earth's early and fiery beginnings. Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources operates the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary and Visitor's Center. This spectacular wildlife refuge is conveniently located right in Upper Marlboro. It encompasses nearly 1,700 acres, serving as a breeding area and wintering ground for Canadian geese. Founder Edgar A. Merkle also founded Merkle Press, which printed Sports Illustrated, Life magazine, and many other popular publications over the years.
About Upper Marlboro
The original charter for Upper Marlboro dates back to 1706. The town got its name from Winston Churchill's ancestor, the First Duke of Marlborough. Upper Marlboro was founded on land that belonged to several prominent estates, including Darnall’s Chance. It was originally a port town, playing a significant role in selling and shipping tobacco.
The older section of Upper Marlboro, made up of 100 acres, is renowned for its fine examples of historic buildings and residences. It was recently declared a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, you can take a walk back in time to learn more about Upper Marlboro’s history and visit some of the buildings that were converted into historical museums and exhibits.
