The History of Penfield
The Town of Penfield was established in 1810 however the lands were originally part of the hunting grounds of the Seneca Nation, a member of the Haudenosaunee tribes. In 1795, Daniel Penfield began purchasing land and built mills along the Irondequoit Creek to attract residents.
With the decline of milling in the mid-1800s, Penfield became known for its agriculture. The rich soil is perfect for growing apples, cherries, plums, peaches, and pears.
Suburban development grew in the 1950s and 1960s and continues today.
