Bridging Generations

When was the last time you found yourself in the company of someone much older or much younger than you? Some people might think teens and seniors go together as well as peanut butter and mustard. Those people haven’t been to The Watermark.

Nestled alongside Justin-Siena High School, a Lasallian Catholic high school with around 650 students, The Watermark residents have forged a unique partnership that defies generational divides. While this partnership between the two has been around since the community opened, it was about two years ago when it really blossomed into what it is today.

Residents started a tutoring program for the students during their midterms and finals, providing invaluable academic support. But the connection doesn't stop there. Residents have eagerly joined the high school's Book Club and Technology Club, enriching both sides with their wealth of experience and wisdom.

According to Community Life Director Kendal Buffington, this intergenerational relationship has proven to be mutually beneficial. It's a dynamic exchange where each group gains insights into the unique perspectives and challenges of the other, offering support and fellowship along the way.

Science also tells us there's something truly special about these intergenerational connections. Research suggests that such interactions can lead to a decrease in depression, anxiety, and stress for individuals of all ages. Furthermore, engaging in meaningful conversations and classes fosters cognitive health, keeping minds sharp and spirits high.

And let's not forget the invaluable role these connections play in breaking down stereotypes and combating ageism. By fostering genuine friendships across generations, the two are actively dismantling harmful stereotypes, one conversation at a time. It's a small yet significant step toward a more inclusive and understanding society.

So, the next time you're tempted to stick with your own age group, consider the enriching experiences and newfound friendships that await when you bridge the generational gap.
