The Joy of Giving
Did you know that lending a hand can do wonders for your well-being? Volunteering isn’t just about giving back; it’s a powerful tool for reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, combating depression, boosting self-esteem, and increasing happiness. It's like a holistic prescription for a healthier, happier life. There’s not a pill in the world that can manage all that at once.
At Watermark communities, residents and associates have embraced the profound benefits of volunteering. Their experiences underscore the immense joy found in helping others, creating ripple effects of positivity throughout their communities.

Lessons in Generosity
At East Village Place, Resident Ambassador Joy Holsing spends her time as a site director, tutor, and mentor for Action Centered Tutoring Services (ACTS), a free one-to-one tutoring service for kids in grades 1-5. She began volunteering with ACTS almost 20 years ago when she retired and is a favorite among the kids. Last June, Joy, with the help of East Village Place and Watermark for Kids, donated $2,500 to the organization, which will help them set up new tutoring sites, educational tools, and books.
"East Village Place is proud to celebrate and support Joy’s volunteer work and her commitment to giving back,” said Executive Director Patti Castelli. “She is an inspiration not only to those she tutors but to all our residents and associates.”

Nourish With Purpose
Residents at The Fountains at RiverVue have raised money for a variety of causes over the years. This past December, they created a book of recipes just in time for holiday gift giving, called Nonna’s Secret Recipes. All proceeds go toward Watermark for Kids, a foundation that helps underprivileged children. The cookbook celebrates classic Italian recipes that residents have had in their families for generations. The Threads That Connect Us
In 1992, a group of knitters at The Fountains at La Cholla discovered an opportunity to give back to the greater community and took action. They began crafting cozy sweaters for local students in need, a tradition that has endured for over three decades. Through their weekly knitting sessions, these residents have woven threads of warmth, compassion, and connection, knitting over 11,000 sweaters and countless hearts along the way.
A Call to Action: Embracing the Gift of Giving
One thing is for sure, the residents at Watermark love to be involved and to make a difference. They understand that by giving to others, they enrich not only their own lives but also the lives of those around them. Volunteering can improve your health and happiness while making a positive impact on someone’s life.
